What is a fuse?
A fuse is one such device. Which prevents any electrical appliances from the house from getting spoiled.
The fuse is one such electrical device. Which protects the circuit or the electrical currents from any kind of power losses. Such as over current, over load.
If we do not use the fuse, a short circuit in the wiring can damage the house. And there can be fire in the house.
The fuse was invented by Thomas Alva Edison in the 1890s.
There are several types of fuses. And different fuses are used according to different needs.
How does the fuse work?
The fuse is made of a non-burning material. And inside it is a low resistance iron leaf. Which is when a huge amount of current passes through it. So that leaf melts the same. Due to which the fuse is damaged. And the current does not reach further and the goods do not go bad. As such, the fuse is made of zinc, copper, alluminium, silver and other alloys.
The fuse can be easily replaced and re-inserted. The fuse also acts as a circuit breaker. When there is a sudden drop in electricity. So the fuse breaks the circuit there.
The fuse does not work just like a safety protector. He also protects people from electrical hazards.
Types of fuse
- DC type fuse
- AC type fuse
DC Type Fuse
The current in the DC circuit is very high. And the current flowing in it. It flows continuously because it is direct current.
The value of DC current is always above 0 volt. And sometimes an electric arc comes in between the wires because of the excess current coming through. And this arc is very difficult to remove. DC fuse is used to avoid this arc. Which are applied at a greater distance according to AC fuses. Because of this the chances of arc coming down. And which DC fuses. They grow up.
AC Type Fuse
We know in AC current.That it oscillates 50 to 60 times. From 0 voltage to its maximum voltage every second due to which there are chances of arc forming. They are very rare. Inside the fuse of AC type, hence small size fuses are installed in it.The AC fuses are further divided into two parts.
- Low Voltage Fuses (LV)
- High Voltage Fuses (HV)
Low Voltage Fuses(LV)
Low voltage fuse is called which is below 1000V.
Low voltage fuse (LV) is divided into five parts. Such as rewirable fuse, drop out, striker, switch, cartridge fuses.

- Striker Fuse
- Switch Fuse
Rewirable fuse is applied in small things. Such as in household wirings, in small industries and in small current-carrying items. This fuse is very easy to remove. Without any electrical shock.
Drop Out Fuse
This type of fuse is used to protect transformers outside the house.
This type of fuse is used for tripping (unloading) and closing of the circuit.
This type of fuse is used for low and medium voltage levels.
This fuse is made by mixing cartridge, fuse base, cap and adapter ring. It has a fuse cap above the fuse base which is fitted with a fuse element. Also the cartridge is connected by adapter ring. This circuit is completed when the cartridge makes a light contact with the conductor.
High Voltage Fuses(HV)
High voltage fuse is called. Which is above 1000v.
It is used for rescue of instrument transformers and small transformers. It is made of silver, copper, tin.
There are three types of HV.
- Cartridge Type HRC Fuse
- Liquid Type HRC Fuse
- Expulsion Type HV Fuse
Cartridge Type HRC Fuse
HRC type fuses are cut in helix form. Which carry the effect of corona to the upper voltage. It consists of two fuses parallel to one. One is of low resistance and the other of high resistance which is fuse of low resistance. It excludes normal current. And prevents short circuits from happening.
Liquid Type HRC Fuse
This type of fuse contains carbon tetra chloride. And both its ends are covered with cap.
When there is any disturbance in the fading current that is above its limit, then there is a filled element in it. He comes out The filled fluid arc acts as an extinguisher. Which is used to protect and support transformers and to break the circuit.
Expulsion Type HV Fuse
This type of fuse is most commonly used. This is cheaper to protect feeders and transformers. It has a capacity of 11V. It is of fuse cylinderical design.
